Seat reservation on Bernina Express Tirano to Chur

Short summary – read this first

Gracie has booked an 8-day Swiss rail pass and is planning to travel from Milan to Tirano to take the Bernina Express to Chur. She asks for advice on which side of the train offers the best views and when she should reserve her seats.

Key takeaways:
  • Reserve your seats on the Bernina Express as early as 6 months in advance to secure the best views.
  • When booking, make sure to indicate that you have a Swiss Travel Pass to just pay the reservation fee.
  • Check the seating plan, but note that the direction of travel may not be guaranteed, so confirm before traveling.

    Good Morning all,

I have just booked and paid for our 8 day Swiss rail pass.

We will be travelling from Milan to Tirano where we would like to board the Bernina Express to Chur.

I have read the left side will get the better view (Our pass is for 1st Class) .

I see that one side of the train has single seats the other seats for two.

Left side going from Tirano to Chur is that on the single seat side

How early do I need to reserve our seats

    Thanks for your hekp

    Hello Gracie,

You can book seats on the BEX as far out as 6 months at shop.rhb.ch/en/catalog /product/view/id/18. Don’t delay. During the booking process you will get the opportunity to nominate you have a Swiss Travel Pass so will only pay the reservation charge.

The left side is the best for heading north. The website which shows the seating plan says the direction of travel is not guaranteed.

For what it’s worth when I made bookings the seats at the top of the seating plan are on the right heading south. So I guess they are on the left heading north. Not sure if that helps or guarantees anything.

    Thank you for your advice

I have gone to the link to reserve my tickets. At the moment it tells me to enter the correct birth date . I am putting in 25 06 48 for the 25 th June 1948 this seems to be right to me. Also where no discount the drop down box shoes Swiss pass but can not highlight this.

In Australia it is late at night so will try again in the morning

    Thanks again for your help

I believe it has recently been increased from 3 to 6 months.

    Hi Oldie,

That message seems to make sense, as you can go ahead and purchase seat reservations. You can’t purchase the actual ticket yet, which is separate from a reservation and not needed if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, for example.

thank you guys so much. We got the reservation and printed. The purchase was – seemed – very safe. the steps to get the purchase done were clear – with a lot of one time codes for use of US credit cards. They should think about paypal. Well done. Now off to GEX

Again thanks for all of your help

Good job! It’s exciting isn’t it? I never use a travel agent but almost resorted to getting one to book BEX and GEX train tickets for me before I found this site!

    Hi

got the reservation on the BEX – we will be using rail pass as well, so tickets not required.

the GEX still says 3 months out. The other SB B train reservations are also not yet available so i will remain patient.

I can get travel support from AMEX, but i have found it useless. My spouse finds the hotels, i do the ground and air travel. Except for the trains – we are pretty much all set, including site seeing.

    Hello Oldie,

You wrote . . . “The other SB B train reservations are also not yet available so i will remain patient.”

What other trains do you need reservations for? Have you read http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/reservations/howto use. With a Swiss Travel Pass you just hop on and go on all but the very few scenic trains on which reservations are compulsory.
