Should I visit Switzerland in June or September?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Yenhan10 is planning a trip to Switzerland in either June or September and is seeking advice on the pros and cons of visiting during these months. They aim for a memorable experience after a long wait due to COVID-19, focusing mainly on sightseeing rather than hiking.

Key takeaways:
  • If you're planning to visit in June, remember that the days are longest, which is great for sightseeing.
  • September is recommended for good weather and fewer crowds, making it ideal for most activities available.
  • Consider the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient access to trains, buses, and boats across Switzerland during your stay.

As I know June and September are the low seasons to visit Switzerland and I intend to visit during these low seasons.

What do you suggest and what are the pros and cons to visit for each month respectively?

I’m facing dilemma to decide now. Help!

    Hi Yenhan10,

You can find useful information about the best time to visit here: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit

In my opinion, June and September are not considered low season but perhaps there will be less tourists during this time compared to July and August. I think the main difference will be the weather. If you’re visiting at the end of September, the weather might be mild.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hello Yenhan10,

It also depends on what you’re planning to do. For high alpine hiking, for example, September is better than June because the chance of snow blocking the trails is almost zero. For photography, I’d pick June. Both months are great, if you’re lucky with the weather (as always).

Thanks Arno, we plan to sight seeing mostly, not sure about the hiking part. It’s been a dream to visit this beautiful country and my dream almost came true back in 2020, and Covid outbreak and I had to postpone for 3 years. I don’t want to be disappointed so I just try to pick the best month to make my dream come true.

    Hi Yenhan10,

Depending on your interests, be it cable cars, hiking, seeing towns/villages, museums, etc. you should look through the link Anna provided.

As I understand it, June is at the very beginning of the summer season, but many higher altitude hiking trails may not yet be open. In September, pretty much anything you want to do is available. It may be slightly past the tourist season, but it is less crowded, and generally good weather throughout the country. I, and many folks in/on this forum have been very happy with their September travels to Switzerland. Again, not knowing your interests, I personally would recommend September. I had zero issues with any temperatures (in September 2018) and my weather was fantastic. I realize this can change between any trip, but generally speaking Sept is a good time to travel.

I hope this helps you in some way. Happy travels.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

The length of daylight is at its maximum in June, which can be an advantage for sightseeing

Hi thanks for the advise, was looking forward to visit as soon as possible at first and June seems like a perfect month, but in the end we booked flights in September because, you know it is cheaper… thanks anyway

    Hi Yenhan10,

No problem at all. I don’t believe you’ll be disappointed (unless you have a bad streak of weather). I had two weeks of great weather. Enjoy,

    Danielsan

I would travel to the mountain areas of Switzerland in September, as visibility is usually very good then and the sky is nice and blue.
