St. Gallen: is a 1.5 hour visit worth it?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler plans a two-day stay in Zurich during a summer trip. They will visit Appenzell and the Aescher Guesthouse on the first day, stopping in St. Gallen to see the Abbey Library before returning to Zurich. They ask if St. Gallen is worth the stop and what else to see.

Key takeaways:
  • The Abbey Library in St. Gallen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it worth the visit.
  • With a Swiss Travel Pass, entry to the Abbey Library is free, so make sure to have it ready.
  • Stroll around St. Gallen's old town for a charming experience if time allows.

Hello there! We plan to base ourselves in Zurich for 2 days as part of our 15 day summer trip. On day 1, we will leave early to go to Appenzell and go up to the Aescher Guesthouse. We will head down around noon and tour Appenzell town. We plan to stop at St Gallen and visit the Abbey Library for 1 1/2 hrs en route to Zurich because we plan to reserve dinner at Niederdorf. Is St Gallen worth it? Or are we spreading ourselves too thin. We will travel by train. Day 2 will be spent touring and shopping in Zurich. What else in St Gallen is worth stopping for? Thank you !

    Hi samlam,

The Abbey Library in St. Gallen is a popular attraction and quite special. The cathedral building with the library is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are keen to visit, they recommend spending an hour or two here – of course this is personal. If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, entry is actually free.

If the weather is favourable, you can also stroll around the city itself, the old town really takes you back in time. Another option is to take a ride on the Mühleggbahn funicular and enjoy the views.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi samlam,

No more Swiss Travel Pass sales that we are aware of I am afraid, only the earlier one they had in Spring.

In case you need any purchase options, you can find some in the below link:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
