St. Moritz to Tirano: Bernina Express seat reservations sold out

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning to ride the Bernina Express from St. Moritz to Tirano on October 12, 2024, but finds all seats are reserved. They want to know if they can take the PE BEX 971 train instead and if their Swiss Travel Pass covers it, as well as looking for alternative travel options for that day.

Key takeaways:
  • You can take the PE BEX 971 train without needing a separate ticket if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, as it covers the route.
  • If panoramic car seats are sold out, you can ride in the non-panoramic carriages which are comfortable and have good windows.
  • Regional trains offer hourly service throughout the day without reservation and can be a great alternative for your trip.

    Hi all,

I m planing to travel from  St moritz to Tirano in Bernina Express on 12.10.2024 either 9.17 or 13.17 train. But all the seats are reserved for the whole day.  When I check the same route on SBB app tickets are available for 9.17am train(PE BEX 971)and I can buy the ticket from there.

Can I take PE BEX 971 train instead of Bernina express or are they both the same?

If I can go on PE BEX 971, Do I need a ticket for it as I have 15 days swiss travel pass for the period I m staying in swiss?

Or is there any other option for me for that day to travel to Tirano from St moritz as I have pretty much done with my itinerary

    Help appreciate!

    Thanks

    Hi Buddhikap,

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the Bernina Express route is included (whether on the Bernina Express or on a regional train), and you don’t need a ticket.

Tickets and reservations are two separate things. SBB can sell tickets for the Bernina Express route, but you cannot travel in the Bernina Express panoramic cars without the mandatory reservation in addition to a ticket.

If reserved seats in the panoramic cars are sold out, you can travel in the unreserved “normal” carriages at the front of the train, or take a regional train along the same route. The normal non-panoramic carriages are perfectly comfortable and have quite big windows, so it will still be an enjoyable experience.

The 9:17 and 13:17 trains are Bernina Express trains, with panoramic carriages (mandatory reservation), and a couple of normal carriages at the front (unreserved seating).

There are also normal regional trains at hourly intervals throughout the day at 48 minutes past the hour, from 7:48 to 16:48. No reservations are required for these trains.

I hope you enjoy the lovely trip from St Moritz to Tirano!

Buddhikap85@ – there are for this moment problems with “Bernina Express” reservation website, so don’t worry. You must wait few hours, maybe till tomorrow. For now it’s showing false messages such “Sold out” or “Connection not find”.
