Stay 2 nights in Poschiavo or Tirano?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip in September and wants to ride the Bernina line, starting from either Tirano or Poschiavo. They're curious whether to stay in the scenic village of Poschiavo for two nights or return to the larger town of Tirano. They aim to enjoy the landscape and explore nearby villages while keeping their luggage at a hotel.

Key takeaways:
  • Poschiavo is a charming choice for two nights, offering easy access to the Poschiavo Valley.
  • The Bernina line offers breathtaking scenery; consider stopping at Bergün and Alp Grüm for great views.
  • Hotels in Poschiavo provide the Valposchiavo guest card for free perks on two-night stays.
  • If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, train tickets are free, but seat reservations are needed for a fee.

Our September travels will be in northern Italy, but we are able to squeeze in one full day to travel on the Bernina line. We could arrive mid-day in Tirano or Poschiavo. We’ll ride the Bernina line starting early the next day heading north as far as Filisur. We hope to make at least one or two stops when we head back south on the train line. Poschiavo looks to be a very attractive little village. Would choosing a hotel there and spending one afternoon and two evenings be a good choice? Or better to begin and end in the larger Tirano? We do love scenic villages. It works best for us to leave our luggage in the hotel and spend both nights in a more south location along the Bernina.

*We know it will be a long day of mostly train travel. The train forum was very informative and we determined that we will ride the regional trains and not the official Bernina Express train. We bought Saver Day passes for that day and have our fingers crossed for acceptable weather.

    Hi norski,

Poschiavo is only half an hour ride from Tirano. If you like small villages, Poschiavo is a good place to stay for 2 nights and explore the Poschiavo Valley.

    Enjoy your trip!

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Norski

Great choice! The stretch of line between Tirano and Filisur is spectacular, and is so varied, with every kind of scenery and historical interest. Filisur is a very beautiful location, with the railway on a ledge above the village. I might suggest the pretty Bergün as one stop off point and the fabulous isolated Alp Grüm, with its stunning view down the steep descent into the Poschiavo valley as another. A good stop for a coffee and stroll. Poschiavo itself is lovely. The Coop shops here and at Filisur have very restricted hours, though.

I’d like to put in a good word too for Tirano, a small historical town. Its old centre, about a ten minute walk from the twin stations, is full of typically ancient Italian buildings and interest. It’s also a good place to spend less!

Have a great trip. I’m going there too later in September.

    Anna and John,

Thank you both for your helpful replies. It seems we would do very well to stay in either town. I did learn the hotels in little Poschiavo provide a free card for stays 2 nights or longer – the Valposchiavo guest card. http://www.valposchiavo.ch/en/plan/accommodation/all-inclusive-guest-card

We could take advantage of some sights in the area on the afternoon of our arrival. And, if we select Tirano, the hotel and dining costs would be less and we could tour the historical town center. John, your suggestions for stops along the Bernina route are appreciated!
