Milan to Zurich with Saver Day Pass – quick stop in Lugano and Como?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip starting in Milan and ending in Zurich, with stops in Lugano and Como. They want to know if the Swiss Saver Day Pass covers their Italian train journey or if they need separate tickets. The traveler seeks clear guidance for their travel costs and options for the trip.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Saver Day Pass is valid only from the Swiss border station Chiasso, so you'll need separate tickets for the Milan to Como leg of your trip.
  • If taking a Eurocity express train from Milan, be aware that seat reservations are required.
  • Consider using the RE80 service, which does not require seat reservations and can be a more flexible option.

We will be starting and ending out journey in Switzerland with some time in Italy and on one particular day we will begin in Milan and end in Zurich. My thought was to buy the Day Saver ticket so we could get off the train in Lugano and possibly Como as well, but I’m wondering if the Day Saver ticket will cover the Italian portions of our journey or if I just need to buy point to point tickets at the time of travel.

    TIA

    Hello TIA

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thank you for this and your other thread.

On your trip from Milan to Zurich, a Swiss Saver Day Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/) will only be valid from the frontier station of CHIASSO.  You will need an Italian point to point tickets for the 51 kilometres Milano Centrale-Como-Chiasso.

If you leave Milan on a Eurocity express train bound for Switzerland, you will also need seat reservations.  If you use the RE80 service which I recommend in my answer to your other thread, you do not need reservations.

    Kind regards

    Roger
