Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Odettb is planning a road trip from Paris to Murren and wants to know if they need to buy a Swiss motorway vignette and how to pay for toll roads. Key takeaways:
  • Purchase a Swiss motorway vignette upon entering Switzerland if your car is not from there.
  • The vignette costs CHF 40 and is valid for up to 14 months.
  • It's advisable to buy the vignette at the border, though you can also find it at gas stations and post offices.

We are renting a car in Paris and travelling to Murren (Car Park in Lauterbrunnen). Do we require a Swiss motorway vignette? And how do we pay for the toll roads that we will be travelling on? Thank you.

Hi Odettb and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Yes, if your rental car is not from Switzerland you will have to buy a Swiss vignette when you cross into Switzerland. Read more about them and where to buy them here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/motorwayvignette

You aren’t traveling on any toll roads in Switzerland – the vignette is the only toll.

    Hi,

If you travel on toll roads in France you will pay your tolls as you proceed along the autoroutes.

Lucas has mentioned the vignette. Its cost is only CHF 40 and its validity is for an entire year (actually up to 14 months). It is a great deal, especially when you compare this to the tolls you pay in France and Italy. When renting your car in Paris, you can ask the rental agency if any of their cars already have a Swiss 2018 Vignette, but the chances of this are limited, but maybe you’ll get lucky. Chances of this are much better if you rent your car at an airport or in a French city right near the Swiss border. A good example of this is the Basel/Mulhouse Airport, where many of the cars there have been driven into Switzerland and so already have a vignette. Vignettes are not transferable so once one is affixed to the windshield of a car, that is where it must remain. I attach a photo of the 2018 vignette. Depending on which road you are on when you arrive in Switzerland, you may or may not be met by an officer checking to see if you already have a vignette attached to your windshield. It is actually better if you can buy it at the border. If not, they are available at gasoline stations and post offices. My advice, get it as soon as you can.

Thank you for that advise. We are planning on buying it at the border.
