Short summary – read this first

A couple has been planning a 3-week driving trip to Switzerland and is now looking to go in mid-August to mid-September. They want to know if the mountain passes will be open during this time. The couple appreciates the helpful updates from the forum on the ongoing COVID situation.

Key takeaways:

  • Check websites for real-time mountain pass conditions to stay informed about any possible closures.
  • The end of August is often warm on the high passes, and it is a quieter travel time after the school holidays.

My husband and I were originally planning a 3 week driving trip to Switzerland in May of 2020. We have continued to plan and that 3 week trip is now just over a month (thanks to everyone on this forum who has given us great information). We have also really appreciated the updates on the COVID situation in Switzerland.

We are now thinking we may do this trip later this year. I have checked this page http://www.myswissalps.com/car/trafficinfo but just wanted to check about the mountain passes. Are the mountain passes open mid August-mid September? We of course understand that any road can close at any time but just want to check that the mountain passes will most likely be opened during this time. Thanks for your help.

All the main mountain passes are open mid-August to mid-September. It is often still very warm on the high passes until the end of August, but it’s a good time to visit as school and family holidaymakers in Europe tend to start going home from the middle of August. October is the first month where there is a risk that a mountain pass (ie the very highest altitude) ones will start to close for their winter break.

In addition to the information already provided: on the page you’ve studied (http://www.myswissalps.com/car/trafficinfo), you’ll also find links to pages with mountain pass conditions.
