Buying the Swiss Travel Pass after booking seats on Bernina Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named kubra is planning a trip in Switzerland and wants to know when to get a Swiss Travel Pass for the Bernina train and how to use the SBB app for train journeys from Chur to Bern. They are looking for specific advice on purchasing the travel pass and understanding train options.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase your Swiss Travel Pass before traveling to benefit from unlimited travel on Swiss public transport including the Bernina Express.
  • For scenic trains like the Bernina Express, you need to reserve your seat in advance; the Swiss Travel Pass covers your travel cost, but not the seat reservation.
  • Use the SBB app to check which trains are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass during your journey.

Hello. We learned that if you have a Swiss Travel pass, the Bernina train is discounted. We only made a seat reservation. When should we get a Swiss Travel pass? Before getting on the Bernina train? My other question is about the SBB application. For example, I want to go from Chur to Bern. How can I understand which of these trains accept a Swiss travel pass?

    Hello kubra

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

I think you need to study this website’s section on Rail Passes suitable for use in Switzerland. Here’s the link: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/

If you are doing a LOT of travelling in Switzerland then you should certainly buy a Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/).  And you need to buy it before travelling.  I regularly visit Switzerland from my home in Britain, and I always buy my STP ‘on line’ about a fortnight before I fly to Zurich. It gives FREE travel on all Swiss Public Transport (Trains, buses, trams, boats etc.) except for lines which simply go up mountains without serving a village or town.

For example, your STP will be valid for FREE travel on the Bernina Express (provided you have a reservation) and on all the stopping trains on the Bernina line: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/bernina-express/ . The STP will be valid on all the main line trains in Switzerland, for example Chur to Zurich and Zurich to Bern intercity trains.

If you invest in an STP, there are only two situations where you have to pay before you make your journey..  Firstly, if you go up a mountain, for example, like Titlis or Gornergrat.  Secondly if you go on a train like the Glacier Express where reservation is mandatory.  You have to pay for the seat reservation.  You do NOT buy a travel ticket. Your STP is your travel ticket!

    Best wishes

    Roger

    Hi kubra_cilogru,

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you can enjoy unlimited travelling on Swiss public transport. This includes trains, trams, boats and buses, and also panoramic trains such as the Bernina Express and Glacier Express. However for the panoramic trains, prior seat reservation is required.

In addition, the Swiss Travel Pass also provides discounts up to 50% on mountain transportation such as cable cars, gondolas, cogwheel trains and funiculars. You can find further information about the Swiss Travel Pass here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/

Regarding travelling on the scenic trains with a Swiss Travel Pass, you can purchase your seat reservation first and get the Swiss Travel Pass later anytime before the start of your trip. You will need to present both on board on the day of travelling.

Let us know if you more info.

    Regards,

    Anna
