Swiss Travel Pass & Bernese Oberland Pass coverage

Short summary – read this first

Paul R is planning a 25-day trip to Switzerland next year and is looking for detailed information about discounts on chairlifts, cable cars, and gondolas in the Bernese Oberland region. Specifically, he wants a summary of what is free or has a 50% discount with the Swiss Travel Pass and Bernese Oberland Pass to help him create an itinerary that maximizes features while minimizing costs.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the pass pages for comprehensive details about discounts, downloadable maps, and purchasing options.
  • Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass Flex for flexibility during your trip, or the Swiss Half Fare Card for consistent 50% discounts for a month.
  • Use spreadsheets available on trip planning websites to compare different travel options and make informed decisions.

While most chairlifts, cablecars and gondolas, perhaps funiculars, get 50% discount with the SwissTravel Pass and Bernese Oberland Pass, some are free it seems, eg:

“Cable car from Stechelberg to Mürren: free

Cable car and train from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren: free

Cable car from Stans to Stanserhorn: free”

    Any others?

Is there a summary of this free and 50% discount information, perhaps for Swiss Travel Pass and Bernese Oberland Pass? A spreadsheet would be perfect.

I am interested mostly in the Bernese Oberland region, say from Engelberg to Lucerne, including any more remote chairlifts/gondolas etc.

    Thanks, Paul R

    Hi Paul,

Did you check our pass pages? They explain about what’s included/discounted, there’s a downloadable map, links to places to buy, and much more:

The maps in particular are useful to get more insight I think. Let us know if you have any questions left!

In addition to the myswissalps links given by Arno, the exact detailed list of participating companies for the BO pass is given on the BO pass website:

Thanks everyone. Yes, I have read most of the pages and descriptions of lifts and trains. Was looking for a summary that’s all. Bit lazy on my part!

I will be in the country next year for about 25 days and I am considering a Swiss Travel Pass Flex for 15 days, so I am trying to write a detailed itinerary that maximises features and minimises expenses.

I am using Kev Reynolds Guide: ‘Walking in the Bernese Oberland’ for some guidance.

    Thanks, Paul R

    Hi Paul,

in case you are here for more weeks, the Swiss Travel Pass Flex (https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex) can be good, as you already mentioned it. I can also recommend the Swiss Half Fare Card, as it is valid for a month. So it allows you to buy 50% discounted tickets for nearly all trips in Switzerland during one month: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard.

At http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass you’ll find a spreadsheet, you can use that to compare your option.
