Swiss Travel Pass – what is included and excluded

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Yuahtung is planning an 8-day trip in Switzerland from December 7 to December 14, using a Swiss Travel Pass. They want to know about ticket requirements for the Eiger Express cable car and the Eigergletscher train to Jungfraujoch, as these aren't fully covered by the pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase separate tickets for the Eiger Express and Eigergletscher train as they are not included in the Swiss Travel Pass, but you'll get a 25% discount.
  • It's better to buy tickets for Jungfraujoch the day before or the morning of your visit to avoid weather-related issues, as mountain tickets are generally non-refundable.
  • You can find specific details about ticket prices and discounts for Jungfraujoch online.

I bought a 8-day Swiss Travel Pass (STP) and I will be arriving in Zurich Dec 7 2023. I’m planning to use the pass until Dec 14 (8 days) on a few SBB trains as well as two Scenic Trains – the Glacier Express from Brig to Chur and the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano. I’m also planning to take a side trip up to Jungfraujoch. at Grindelwald taking the Eiger Express cable car and the Eigergletscher train to the top.

My understanding is the cable car and the Eigergletscher train are not part of the STP and I will need to purchase separate tickets (at a discount) to cover these journeys, am I correct. I suppose I could purchase these ticket in advance online?

Any input would be highly appreciated. Many thanks.

    Hi Yuahtung,

That’s right. The Swiss Travel Pass fully covers your trip up to Grindelwald. From Grindelwald Terminal to Jungfraujoch via the Eiger Express, you need to purchase a ticket (discounted 25%). You can find information about tickets to Jungfraujoch here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets

    Hello Yuahtung,

I would not purchase your tickets to Jungfraujoch too in advance. We always advise travelers to check beforehand, the weather forecast or the local webcams before booking/purchasing any tickets for mountain excursions. (They are generally non-refundable)

It would be a shame not to be able to enjoy the views due to unfavourable weather.

You’ll be fine to purchase tickets the day before your Jungfraujoch visit or even on the morning.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
