They're particularly interested in the current weather trends and how to layer their clothing effectively for different locations, including valley areas and specific mountain spots like Rigi and Gimmelwald.

Key takeaways:
  • Pack lightweight layers like a cotton sweater, light fleece jacket, and a rain jacket for flexibility.

First, let me say thank you for all of the helpful advice thus far. Our trip is in May 2023 and we will be moving about the country via trains for about 14 days. I know that the winter was a warmer one than usual, I believe, and would like to know if the warmer trend has continued into the early part of 2023 and into March now. No one can predict the weather for day to day precisely, so I am not asking for that, just asking for the trend thus far as it will aid us in our packing/attire. e know to pack layers, but I am wondering how heavy should our layers be if we are mostly at valley locations with the exception of Rigi, Gimmelwald, Klein Scheidegg as examples. ( 3 days not hikers). We will also be in Locarno/Maggiorre area and I assume that will be warmer. Thanks, again.

We’ve traveled to Switzerland 3 times in late September, early October. I imagine the general weather may be similar. After our 1st trip, for which we overpacked layers, we realized all we needed for any layering was a cotton sweater, light fleece jacket, and lightweight rain jacket. We usually wore just the sweater or fleece (light wool jacket is an excellent substitute for fleece) and rain jacket if it was wet and/or windy. Base layer was just a short or long sleeve T-shirt. We also took lightweight waterproof hiking boots or shoes since we did do some easy hiking at various popular mountaintops.

No need for thermals, cold weather hats, gloves, heavy pants, etc. If it got too cold (never did) simply spend less time outside. Lugano/Locarno is warmer so a regular shirt/top/sweater, shoes & rain jacket (just in case) were more than enough.

Be sure to check the weather, especially the live mountaintop weather cams, before heading out. Enjoy your trip!

    Hi Galvgirl,

Thank you CabinJon for your input. CabinJon has summarised in a nutshell, packing for a trip here!

Yes, the weather has been very haphazard of late, we had a real feel of Spring the other weekend (sunshine and warmth) and only on Monday evening, some cities had snow with temperatures plummeting to zero and below.

Definitely adopting the layering approach is best . Bearing in mind, how you typically feel with the cold, some feel it more than others. A must, per CabinJon. I would say is a rain jacket, short and long sleeve tops.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Galvgirl,

I would take clothes for all weather situations! In May, there can be strong weather fluctuations in Switzerland. From summer temperatures to wet and cold and also snow in the mountains 😉

    Have a great trip

    Martin

Thank you. Has it been a warmer winter/ early spring? Trying to figure out the overall trend so I know ‘how cool’ and ‘how warm’ to layer. Trying to keep luggage to a minimum as we will be on trains often.

    Hello again Galvgirl,

    I understand. Packing light.

To be honest, it has been for me anyway during winter to date, a real mish mash of being super cold days to relatively mild days. I can imagine trying to pack can be tricky. Layers will be way forward, you can always add and take off as need be and a decent rain jacket.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thank you so much. I’ll work with various layers and a rain jacket…Good windbreaker enough or need rain poncho?

    Hello again,

I think a good windbreaker and layers should be sufficient unless you have a preference for something longer like a poncho.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
