Switzerland/Italy in summer: pack warm clothes?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is preparing for a two-week trip to Switzerland and Italy during the summer and is unsure about packing warm clothes. They noticed people in shorts but are concerned about needing layers, especially if visiting the mountains. Packing for a carry-on, they want to maximize space while staying comfortable.

Key takeaways:
  • Pack a light rainproof jacket, a sweater, and jeans or hiking trousers for cooler mountain temperatures.
  • Summer clothing is more affordable and readily available in Switzerland, so consider buying extra t-shirts and shorts there to save space.
  • Always check weather conditions at your destination using webcams to prepare for sudden changes in weather.

People say to dress in layers for summer in Switzerland; however, I am packing for a 2 week trip to Switzerland & Italy in a carry on, so space is at a premium. I am seeing pictures of people in Switzerland wearing shorts in the summer. Are warm clothes really necessary?

    Hi TravelLife,

If your itinerary includes a few trips to the mountains, I recommend packing some warm clothes with you even if you’re visiting in the summer. A light rainproof jacket, a sweater and a pair of jeans or hiking trousers would be sufficient. It can be chilly in the mountains and the weather can change at short notice. You can find useful information about the weather here: http://www.myswissalps.com/weather

Summer clothing is easier to find here and cost substantially cheaper than jackets and fleeces. So be sure to bring a jacket along and if you have limited luggage space, you can shop for extra t-shirts and shorts here. You can usually find some very good bargains during the summer sale.

    Regards,

    Anna

I second Anna’s post. If you’re planning on hiking or taking a gondola to the summit of a mountain, then warm clothes are definitely recommended.

    • Rain Jacket or Wind breaker
    • Warm polar fleece or sweater
    • Light gloves (in case you go to a glacier: like Jungfrauhoch)
    • Jeans / pants

Another recommendation could be to check the webcams of the spots where you’ll be visiting, to see if there is snow or non-sunny weather at the top. For example, I was once hiking in Niesen and got caught in a gnarly snow storm in the fall and was not prepared (luckily we were near the top and took the gondola back down).

    Hope this helps.
