I don’t have a full trip report to post, my photo book ended up being 100 pages long and you wouldn’t want to see all that! However, I want to give thanks and hugs to this site for all the wonderful information that made my planning so very successful. We got the 2nd class Swiss Travel Pass for 15 days and our travel while in the Switzerland portion of our vacation was perfect. The STP and the SBB app are a necessity.

We traveled from Tirano to Pontresina—Zermatt—Montreux—Gruyeres—Murren—Lucern—Basel. We did take the iconic/scenic trains when available and enjoyed them. We took a couple of boat/ferry trips. The thing we were excited about is how many museums and such we got into for free. We enjoy museums, castle tours, cheese factory tours and similar things on vacation, and we never paid for a one.

We have traveled on trains in Poland, Italy, Netherlands, and Germany; but the SBB app and the Swiss trains are great. The fact that most the terminals have ramps is a huge relief for us with our backpack and roller. But the ease of transfers and finding your way around the different terminals was fantastic. I have to say I was very intimidated by the idea of connecting trains, buses, trams and gondolas out of Interlaken; to the point of sleepless nerves. The relief is how easy it is. Signs were everywhere and the SBB app has instructions for each transfer.

Another perfect example of the app use was when we left Lucern hotel for a river cruise in Basel. I entered my addresses and got detailed maps and information for the trip using trains and trams. The dock for the cruise ship was in an area we found strangely remote from traffic, but the map was perfectly right.

Thank you for the information and links to make our tour of Switzerland fantastic. We hope to go back to see even more and we will use this site again when we do.

    Hello Janet

Thank you for an absolutely wonderful report.  It may be short in length, but every point you make is of fundamental importance.

However, there are two points which I would single out. You write ‘The ease of transfers and finding your way around the different terminals was fantastic.’  You add that you were  ‘intimidated by the idea of connecting trains, buses, trams and gondolas…’.

You are most certainly not the only person to have had such worries!  But, as you found, Swiss transport interchanges are very well designed and very easy to navigate, and usually have ramps up and down from platforms.

And then there is the (not unrelated) point about the maps on the SBB app (in the electronic timetable).  I have been visiting Switzerland regularly for 55 years.  I have only recently discovered these electronic maps.  Yet I find them extremely helpful!

    Very best wishes

    Roger
