Tickets prices for return trip Zurich-Rhine Falls

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to the Rhinefalls and is confused about ticket options from Zurich. They want to know the difference between a 9 Zone ticket and an All Zones ticket, and whether there’s a ticket that covers both the Rhinefalls and trams in Zurich for a whole day. They are also unsure if traveling to Schaffhausen incurs extra costs.

Key takeaways:
  • Opt for a return ticket from Zurich HB to Schaffhausen for a day pass, valid until 5 AM the next day.
  • The All Zones ticket is only valid within the Zurich transport network and does not include Schaffhausen; choose the 9 Zone ticket for broader coverage.
  • Buying the return ticket will let you travel on trams and buses in Zurich when returning from Schaffhausen.

    Hi there,

Just a bit confused on the best ticket to purchase for my visit to the Rhinefalls.

On the SBB website, I can see that using a half fare card, a ticket to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall from Zurich HB would cost CHF 11.60. This is for the ticket which says “9 Zone”. For an extra CHF 2.30, there is an “All Zones” ticket.

Could I just understand what is the difference? Also, are there any passes/tickets that would allow me to just purchase once and then go to Rhinefalls and back, as well as use all the trams in Zurich for the whole day?

Also, would going all the way to Schaffhausen cost extra?

    Thank you!

    Hi Irenicis,

With an all-zone ticket, you can travel on all means of transport within the entire Zurich transport network within the validity period.

If you are planning to combine your trip to the Rhinefalls with a trip to Schaffhausen, you might want to consider getting a return ticket Zurich HB – Schaffhausen via Schloss Laufen am Rhinefalls. This ticket is good for a day and valid on trams, buses and boats in Zurich city.

Hi Anna. Thank you for the reply!

Thanks for the information, I get getting the return ticket makes sense because the ticket lasts until the next day 5am and we can still take the buses and trams when we come back from Schaffhausen. Could I just double check, to buy this ticket, I’ll likely have to input Departure at Zurich HB and then Destination Schaffhausen?

On the point on the “All Zone”, actually I still don’t quite understand the differences between this and the “9 Zone” haha. If I’m only going to Rhinefalls and Schaffhausen, would it matter to me?

    Thanks!

The all zones ticket is a ZVV ticket, while the 9 zones ticket is a ZPASS ticket. These are two different products with different range of validity; the ZVV ticket all zones ticket is not valid to Schaffhausen.

If you want visiting the Rhinefalls and Schaffhausen, simply buy a From: Zürich HB To: Schaffhausen return ticket (for example, for the IC train). You will get a ZPASS 9 zones ticket that covers Schaffhausen, Neuhausen, the short train ride from Schaffhausen to Schloss Laufen, as well as Zurich city (zone 110). A return ticket results in a day pass, valid until the next day at 5 AM.

    See the ZPASS map:

    http://www.zpass.ch/dam/zpass/Zonenpläne/2022/ZPass_A3_Korridor_OSTWIND_dez_22.pdf

The ZVV all zones ticket, however, only allows the travel from Zürich HB to Schloss Laufen via Winterthur, not via Schaffhausen as Schaffhausen is outside of the ZVV fare network yet within the ZPASS fare network. The ZVV return ticket results in a 24 hours day pass (including Zurich city) in the contrary to ZPASS day pass that is only valid until 5 AM the next day.

See the ZVV map (and note, Schaffhausen ist not listed):

    Kind regards,

    Roland

Thank you Roland for the in-depth response.

I guess the 9 zones ticket would be for me then!
