Travel from Florence to catch the Bernina Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Florence in early December to ride the Bernina Express train and is seeking advice on the best departure station and schedule. They are looking to travel from Florence to Tirano and St. Moritz, aiming to enjoy the scenic views without requiring an overnight stay in a town, although they are now considering staying a night in Tirano.

Key takeaways:
  • Travel from Florence to Tirano via Milan as this is the best route for the Bernina Express train.
  • Consider staying overnight in Tirano to enjoy the views properly, as it is not feasible to do the entire trip in one day.
  • Check in advance if hotels in Tirano are open in December, as they may have limited availability.

We will be in Florence in early December. We would like to travel using the Bernina Express train. What is the easiest departure station if we are coming from Florence? What would be a reasonable time schedule? We are really just interested in seeing the views not necessarily an overnight in a town – although that is certainly doable. Thank you.

You would need to travel Firenze (Florence) – Milano – Tirano on Italian trains. At Tirano you pick up the Bernina railway north to St Moritz.

However you would have to stay somewhere on route – not possible in 1 day!

But note that all the above is dependent on where you are going from and to – you haven’t made this clear

Thank you for your help. We’d be leaving from Firenze going to Tirano and then to St Moritz. We would return the same way back to Firenze. We didn’t know if going through Milan was the best way. We are now thinking about going from Firenze to Milan and onto Tirano. Staying the night in Tirano, traveling to St Moritz and back to Tirano and staying the night. Then traveling back to Firenze through Milan the next day. This is in December. Does that make the most sense?

    That is a good plan.

From Firenze you can only reach Tirano via Milano

There are decent hotels in Tirano, but not sure if they open in December
