I suppose the answer might be different depending on your home country.  I’m from the USA and I purchase either an individual trip policy or an annual policy from GeoBlue.  They are part of the large Blue Cross/Blue Shield family in the USA.  I have never had to use this insurance.  But I’m confident that they are a good company and have wide acceptance around the world.  Your mileage may vary.

I have always purchased a GeoBlue policy as well for travel abroad from the U.S. The majority of their reviews are positive. Whatever company you choose, make sure that the policy includes significant medical evacuation coverage, so that you can be flown to your home country for continued treatment when safe to do so (if needed).

    Hi Big Dad,

You might want to check with your current health insurance if they provide additional cover for when you are travelling abroad.

    EASW, Anna,

Thank you for letting me know about Geo Blue and I also have a call into my current provider. I’ve been finding that providers of health travel insurance programs get good review comments for their sales program, but when it comes to collecting on a claim, the reviews suddenly drop. You really have to read through all reviews.

    Thanks again,

I agree, looking for reviews that reflect the claims process is essential. Good luck with your research.

    Hi Big Dad,

    >>> travel health insurance when hiking the mountains in Switzerland

I don’t know what sort of hiking you have planned, so this might be overkill, but if it is possible a hiking accident might involve helicopter rescue, and your insurance doesn’t specifically cover mountain rescue / helicopter rescue, you might like to consider a Rega patronage. I wrote a bit about this recently:

    (and my further message #1748551)

    Hope this helps!

I had to be hospitalized for 2 days after a fall while hiking  in the Dolomites. I was in a hospital in Bolzano Italy. My regular US health insurance paid eventually in full after a lot of red tape. I do get emergency evacuation insurance for air evacuation home through Med Jet. But if you read the fine print you find a ton of loopholes they won’t  cover. That’s  probably why most companies get such poor reviews as they have so many restrictions on their actual coverage.

    Hi Big Dad,

In addition to the replies above, you could also check with credit card company?  Sometimes they offer additional travel insurance options for purchase.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
