I can’t account precisely for the less than optimal results you are getting on other websites, but the best place to plan your trip is on the SBB site, the official site for the Swiss Railways.
To avoid connections that go through the Gotthard-Basistunnel, use the Settings option to put in via Göschenen.
The train departing Luzern at 13:18 on 8 Sep 2024 is a Treno Gottardo service that runs direct to Locarno. The trip takes 3 hrs 9 mins and you don’t have to change trains in Bellinzona – see attached PDF. This trip is free with your Interrail Pass and reservations are optional.
If you do want to make a reservation, you can do so on the SBB site. Start the process to purchase a ticket, select the appropriate class of travel, and then choose the option right at the bottom of the page for Seat reservation only. It will cost CHF 5.
