a few info about me: Solo travel, fit, no need to stop for food in this specific day.

I’m visiting Switzerland soon, in August, and am planning my itinerary. There is one day that I’m trying to fit a few things in and I just want confirmation that, even extremely hushed, it is still doable.

My day would start in Luzern, and end at Berghaus Männlichen (last cable car 17:00 as far as I understand). I would leave luzern at 7am and get to Meiringen just in time for the bus to Rosenlaui Valley (plan here is really just check the famous social media spot), where I’d stay 1 or 2hr and catch the bus to Grindelwald. From this point I came up with 2 options:

    a) hike from Grosse Scheidegg to first – Bachalpsee – first – cable car. From what I researched a fit person could do this in 3.5h + breaks? From sbb, I believe I could start this hike around 11:30am.
    b) use the cable car up and down and do the hike to Bachalpsee.

Technically I’d be down in Grindelwald at around 4pm, which would give enough time to make it to Männlichen cable car. Am I being too optimistic??
As a last resort would hiking from Kleine Scheidegg to Männlichen be possible?

    Thanks,

    Hi bfm97,

Welcome to MySwissAlps. Thank you for sharing your plan. Let’s break down your journey:

Lucerne to Meiringen on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express train – approx 1 hour (train runs every hour)

Meiringen to Rosenlaui Gletscherschlucht via Postbus – 40 mins (bus runs every hour)

Rosenlaui Gletscherschlucht to Grosse Scheidegg via Schwarzwaldalp – approx 10 mins (runs every hour)

Optional: Recommend hike from Rosenlaui Gletscherschlucht to Schwardwaldalp (45 mins).

Schwarzwaldalp to Grosse Scheidegg by postal bus (15 mins)

Hike from Grosse Scheidegg to First (5.8km, roughly 2.5 h)

Optional Hike from First to Bachalpsee (3km, roughly 1.5 h each way)

First to Grindelwald valley station on gondola (20 mins)

Firstbahn valley station to Grindelwald Terminal by bus (10 mins)

Grindelwald Terminal to Männlichen by gondola (20 mins)

Optional Hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg (roughly 1.5h)

As you can see, this will be a full day activity. For the first half of the day, I would aim to complete the journey up to Grosse Scheidegg. There is a restaurant that serves warm lunch at Grosse Scheidegg.

Then after lunch, start the hike from Grosse Scheidegg to First (https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/hike-first-grosse-scheidegg/). On First, don’t forget to visit the First Cliff Walk and if you have time, you might want to continue walking to Bachalpsee (https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/hike-bachsee/).

Then take the gondola down to Grindelwald to continue to Männlichen (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/mannlichen/).

You will have to check the bus and mountain transport schedules and plan carefully to minimise long waiting time.

I would keep the hikes optional and maybe limit myself to 1 to 2 short hikes only to avoid feeling rushed.

    Regards,
    Anna
