Hi, I desperately want to visit the beautiful little town on Stein am Rhein during our June 2022 trip. I have moved a few things around and have freed up a Sunday to visit from Zurich. Question is – what is open there on Sunday – shops? restaurants? Thanks.

    Hi HeatherCDN,

You’ll find most of the shops closed on Sundays but the restaurants will be open. A visit to Stein am Rhein is usually combined with a visit to the Rhine Falls. For ideas on how to combine these trips, have a look a this tour.

Thank you Anna. We will be travelling from Lucerne on the Saturday and rather than go directly to our hotel in Zurich to drop off our luggage I have found that we can go directly to Winterthur Station where they have a luggage check-in (not lockers) where we can leave our luggage for 4 to 5 hrs and continue to to Stein am Rhein, then pick up our luggage on the way back and continue to Zurich. Do you have any experience/knowledge about this, specifically at Winterthur? Is there any chance they would be full when we get there and not able to take our luggage. I would prefer to go on the Saturday when the shops will be open. Thanks.

    Hi HeatherCDN,

Sure you can deposit your luggage at the SBB Travel Centre at the Winterthur station. The facility is available from 7am to 8pm on Saturday and cost CHF12 per luggage per day. If this is not available you can also use the locker facilities at the station. The lockers come in various sizes and you can either pay by card or cash (CHF6 for up to 4 hours per locker Size XL – fits a cabin bag + oversized bag). The machine will issue you with a QR code which you’ll use to open the locker when you come back to pick up your luggage. It is very convenient as it is available almost 24/7. See attached pictures.
