    Hi All,

Wondered if anyone could offer some advice. I’ll be visiting Grindelwald in late August, does anyone know what the weather is usually like this time of the year? I’ll also be taking a day trip to Jungfraujoch – any weather tips for this too would be much appreciated !

    Hi Trinity,

The weather in Grindelwald in August should be quite nice and hot 25-35 degrees (typically). Jungfraujoch could be as low as 0 degrees or as high as 15 perhaps.

The best advice is to check the weather at Jungfraujoch the day before or day of your proposed travel date. If the weather is poor / cloudy it may not be worth going as you won’t see anything at the top.

thanks Lucas! Much appreciated. I have actually booked tickets to Jungfraujoch but I believe the train tickets are not set in stone because when I bought my grindelwald tickets the tickets didn’t bear a date or time I chose at online checkout, so I emailed the train line and they said I could use it anytime (maybe they meant any time in the specified date). I’ll have to check!

    Hi Trinity,

Yes, tickets can usually be used for any departure time that day (you aren’t reserving a time usually, you are just buying tickets ahead of time).

Strange they don’t at least have a date on them.

    Hi Lucas,

My mistake. There is a date! just not a time. Will it be a free for all regarding seats? I rather go at the time I booked and now because there is no assigned seating does this me we have to stand up for 3 hours?

    Hi Trinity,

You say there is no time on the ticket and then say you booked a time so I’m scratching my head on that one. 🙂

Did you reserve between Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch? That is the only section of the trip where you can reserve seats anyway.

If you bought a ticket on the 10:00 departure from Grindelwald (for example) you did not reserve a seat on that train – You just a pre-bought the ticket. 95% of all trains in Switzerland can’t be reserved and that is fine – that is how the system is designed.

That being said, Jungfraujoch can get very busy in the summer and you may need to wait at Grindelwald for the next train or 2 if it is really busy (unless you’ve booked a time at Kleine Scheidegg).

If you’d like to reserve a time look here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/jungfraujoch/tic kets. The link is under “more on other websites”

Hope that all makes sense? 🙂

    Hi Lucas,

    Thanks for the response!

I bought tickets from Grindelwald from Basel first and selected the time and date. I received the ticket via email but it had no time (which I needed as I assumed it would be on the ticket and I didnt jot it and the route down, as I also thought the route along with platform, train changes to be summarised in the confirmation email) – both of which was not in the email so I contacted them and the below is their reply:

    Thank you for your query.

Tickets purchased online for journeys within Switzerland are not restricted to a particular train. The ticket is valid in any train, on the selected day of travel and for the printed stretch of journey.

Exceptions to this rule are Traffic Community tickets and the special “Supersaver” offer http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelca rds-and-tickets/tickets-for-switzerland/supersaver -tickets.html

In your case, your tickets are valid on the 29th August for a journey from Basel SBB to Grindelwald Via Bern-Interlaken.

The schedule can be checked here: [http://www.sbb.ch/en]http://www.sbb.ch/en

So Lucas, do u recommend pre booking Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch and back? what about Basel to Grindelwald and back ?

Yes exactly. Tickets are valid all day for any departure time on the route you bought the ticket for, but that never includes a reserved seat on a particular train departure – that is extra but not often possible nor rarely needed when it is.

The panoramic express trains noted here are the exception: https://www.myswissalp s.com/activities/sceni ctrips/train (reservation is mandatory)

As well the last section of the route to Jungfraujoch (from Kleine Scheidegg) can be reserved but isn’t mandatory. It is something to think about making in peak tourist season; to possible avoid having to wait for the next train (30-40 minutes perhaps).

If you go first thing in the morning you can avoid most of the crowds and not worry about the reservation.
