Which route to Cabane de Louvie from Cabane du Mont Fort?

Short summary – read this first

LeeAnn and her husband are planning to hike from Cabane du Mont Fort to Lake Louvie and Cabane de Louvie in the first week of September. They need advice on choosing between two routes from Col Termin to Lake Louvie, as they haven't found a clear comparison of the two paths. They are looking for insights on the pros and cons of each route.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the official Swiss hiking website for detailed route descriptions and insights on both options.
  • Consider taking the route towards Col de Louvie, then heading north at Plan da Gole for a scenic view and the chance to explore historic barns.
  • Look for pictures and additional descriptions on hiking blogs for a better visualization of both routes.

    Hello,

My husband and I will be hiking from Cabane du Mont Fort to Lake Louvie/Cabane de Louvie in the first week of September.  At the junction of Col Termin, I am trying to decide between two routes to reach Lake Louvie/Cabane de Louvie.  One route continues south and goes down the slopes of the Têtes de Louvie ridge then turns east towards Lake Louvie and the other route goes east from Col Termin heading in the direction of Col de Louvie but then heads south at Plan da Gole and thus approaches Lake Louvie from the north.

It seems to be a 50/50 split on various websites as to which route is depicted but I have not found any description or comparison of the two routes.  Can anyone tell me the difference, pros/cons, etc of either?

For reference, I have attached a map outlining both routes.

    Thank you for your help!

    LeeAnn

    Hi LeeAnn,

    Thanks for sharing your plans.

Have you tried searching on the official Swiss hiking website?  You can find it in the below link, scroll to “Other websites of interest” in our hiking section:

Or the Swiss Alpine Club website is quite helpful with hiking route descriptions as it list all huts and how to reach them.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Yolanda,

Thank you for your reply and yes, I have looked at these websites.  There are a few pictures along both routes on the Swiss Mobility Site yet I was still looking for more insight and description from someone that might have hiked both routes.

    Again, thank your suggestions,

    LeeAnn

    Hi LeeAnn,

Here is what I found from the Internet.

Crossing the Col Termin (2648m/8688 ft) you’ll have two choices for a route to Lac de Louvie. Take the one in the direction of the Col de Louvie, then at Plan da Gole, directly north of and above the lake, make your descent on the signed trail to Cabane de Louvie and Fionnay. The great benefit of taking this route is that as you approach the lake from the north, you’ll be able to explore the two large barns with their miraculously self-supporting vaulted stone roofs. Dating to the early 19th century, these ingenious structures have been beautifully restored and classified as historic monuments.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

Thanks so much Anna!  It appears that heading in this direction from Col Termin is along the “official” haute route as you make your way to Cabane de Prafleuri so there are many who go this way before taking the detour to Cabane de Louvie.  However, I did find a description of the other route with several pictures from Climbing7.com.  It looks spectacular so this may be our decision.

Again, thank you for your help,

    LeeAnn
