WiFi hotspot device and SIM card for travel in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

Yvonne is looking for information about the Wifio mobile hotspot and whether she needs her own SIM card for it. She wants clarity on how the device works since her phone doesn’t support eSIM. Several users shared that the Wifio device allows multiple users to connect without needing separate SIM cards.

Key takeaways:
  • You do not need a SIM card to use the Wifio device; it provides a WiFi signal for multiple users out of the box.
  • If your phone doesn’t support eSIM, the Wifio option is very convenient and requires no additional setup.
  • Each person traveling with you does not need an individual SIM card to connect to the Wifio device.

    Hi Yvonne,

You can find relevant info here: https://www.myswissalps.com/planning/practical/mobile-internet/

Personally I prefer to use eSIM as it is very convenient and easy to install. However you need to check if your cellphone supports eSIM.

I would usually rent a hotspot device when I’m travelling in a group or with a family. This device allows internet connection for multiple users.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hi Yvonne,

I agree with Anna: an eSIM makes sense for single travelers with one device. For two or more, or more devices, the Wifio hotspot is ideal. With Wifio, you do not need an eSIM. It’s a very small device, and it works out of the box.

Both options are explained in detail on the page Anna linked to.

    Hi Yvonne,

You can use the pocket WiFi device from Wifio with your existing SIM card.

Hi sorry it’s taking so long for me to understand this it’s all new to me. Will I be putting the SIM card into the Wi-Fio device or in my phone and does each person covered under the Wi-Fio device need their own SIM for Switzerland
    Thank you

    Hi Yvonne,

If you go for the Wifio option, there is nothing you need to do with SIM or eSIM cards. The Wifio device will give you a safe, private WiFi signal that everyone you’re traveling with can connect to. It’s very easy and works for every phone. Everything is explained here, and there’s a video too: https://www.myswissalps.com/planning/practical/mobile-internet/

I hope that clears it all up for you!
