1 day in Zurich with Swiss Half Fare Card

Short summary – read this first

Jeff and his family are planning a trip to Zurich, arriving around 10 AM. They want to know if their 14-year-old needs a ticket or is free with their Family Card, and whether to buy ZVV Day Passes or single tickets for their travel that day.

Key takeaways:
  • Your daughter travels free with a valid Swiss Family Card.
  • Consider getting a ZVV Day Pass for the day for flexibility with trams, buses, and boats.
  • For Uetliberg, you will need three zones, so plan accordingly.
  • Check out the 9 o'clock pass for more zones at the same price as the standard day pass.

    Hi

We (2 adults and a 14 year old) have a Half Fare Card and a Family Card.

When we fly into Zurich we plan to take the train into the city (Stadelhofen) at about 10am, unload our bags, and then either take the train/ cable car to Uetilberg or take a boat ride on Lake Zurich.

When purchasing our tickets does our 14 year old need a ticket, or is she free on the Family Card?

Would it be worth buying ZVV Day Passes, or single tickets for each part of our travels on this day? The only other train journey we’d expect to take would be early the next morning from Stadelhofen to Zurich HB, which would come under the 24 h of a Day Pass.

If we go with ZVV Day Passes would we need to buy one for our daughter, or is she free on the family card?

How many zones would we need on the Day Pass?

    Thanking you.

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

Your son doesn’t need any tickets with a valid Swiss Family Card no.

If you want the freedom of just being able to hop on any tram, bus, boat or train for the day I would lean towards a ZVV day pass. Getting up and down to Uetliberg will probably get you to break even on its own.

The zones will depend on where you go. For Uetliberg you need three zones (Zurich downtown counts as two). If you take a longer boat cruise you will need more zones. You can get the 9’oclock pass for the same price but it includes more zones than the regular day pass. You can find a link to ZVV and their zone map on our getting around Zurich page here.
