Zurich Card vs ZVV 24hr vs Rhinefalls

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Maya Saudin is planning a 3-day trip to Zurich, staying in Bassersdorf. They need help understanding public transport options to explore the city, visit the Lindt chocolate factory, and see the Rhine Falls, especially regarding the Zurich Card and ZVV tickets.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase the ZVV all-zone day pass if you have a Swiss Half Fare Card, as it covers trains, trams, and boats for your city explorations and the Lindt shop.
  • The ZVV 24-hour ticket is valid for unlimited public transportation in the specified zones for 24 hours from your first trip.
  • The ZVV 9 O'Clock day pass allows travel to Rhine Falls and is valid on weekends for the whole day.

    Greetings,

    Hope you’re well.

We need some assistance understanding public transport options in Zurich.

We shall spend 3 days in Zurich. Our accommodation is in Bassersdorf, so naturally we’ll need to commute to and from the city centre. In addition to exploring the old town and other neighborhoods, we want to visit the Lindt chocolate factory and Rhinefalls.

    We have half fare cards.

Is getting the Zurich card worth it?

What is the ZVV 24h ticket and what is it’s coverage? If I get this, will we be able to use trains and boats and trams, since it says all public transportation is included?

What would be the best option to visit Rhinefalls in this scenario?

Kindly advise what would be the best transportation option.

    Thank you.

    Hi Maya Saudin,

The Zurich Card won’t cover your trip to the Rhinefalls. If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card, you’re better off purchasing the ZVV all-zone day pass. You can use the same pass to travel on the trains, trams and boats to the Lindt Chocolate Shop in Kilchberg. You can purchase this at the ticket counter or machine.

Information on how to get to Rhinefalls is available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/rhinefalls/gettingthere

Thank you for the response, Anna.

I was trying to look into ZVV in more detail.

Since we have a half fare card, could I purchase the ZVV 24hr ticket for 4 zones for the day we want to visit Lindt Chocolate Factory and explore the city? I presume this is valid for 24 hours from the time we start our first journey and expires 24 hours later? Does it cover unlimited use of public transport including boats and trams within the specified zones in 24 hours?

Then we could get the 9 o’clock day pass for the day we want to visit Rhine falls. Does the 9 o’clock pass cover travel to the falls? Kindly, could l you tell me more about it?

Requesting some elaboration of the coverage of ZVV 24 hr ticket and 9 o’clock pass.

    Thank you.

I am so new to this zone ticket 🥹🥲 would you please guide me :

I will be in Zurich for a full day on Sunday before flying out the next morning ! I will arrive in the morning from bellinzona so decide to buy ticket from bellinzona—> Zurich HB ( May be a super saver ) as my hotel is nearby the airport in Kloten so I don’t want to travel back and forth , and plan on store luggage in Zurich HB locker and do a self walking tour in old town and have lunch there ! I believe we can reach our hotel no later than 2 pm , if so I plan on take train to Rhine fall ( just look at the above as I went to Niagara fall already and not enough time anyway for detailed activities there) and visit stein AM Rhine !

    1. what kind of ticket I should buy for the above activities? ( I have 1/2 fare card ) 2. Is the above too ambitious? If so I can just do the old town and head to hotel to chill 🤣

    thank you!!!

    Hi Maya Saudin,

A 4-zone 24 hour ZVV ticket will work if you plan to visit the Lindt chocolate shop and explore the city on one day. The ticket is valid for 24 hours from the time of 1st departure. It is valid on all public transport including trains, trams, buses and boats in the specified zones. You can find explanation on how to use the ZVV 24hr tickets here: http://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/travelcards-and-tickets/tickets/daypass.html

The ZVV 9 o’clock day pass is valid on all zones in the ZVV network and can be used to travel from Basserdorf to the Rhinefalls. Be sure to set your destination to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall and not Neuhausen Rheinfall. Neuhausen is not part of the ZVV network and you will have to pay extra. You can find details on how to reach Rhinefalls here: http://www.myswissalps.com/rhinefalls/gettingthere

The ZVV 9 O’Clock day pass is valid Monday to Friday from 9am to 5am on the following day. On Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, the pass has unrestricted validity for the whole day. The 9 O’Clock day pass is only available for all zones.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Fionatravel,

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you can travel to the Rhinefalls for free: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity. Without a railpass, your option would be to purchase a point-to-point ticket or the ZVV 9 o’clock day pass from Zurich HB to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall. Please refer to my respond to Maya Saudin in the previous post.

    Regards,

    Anna
