Zurich to St. Moritz scenic train route

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Zurich Airport to St. Moritz in January and wants to know the most scenic train route. They are particularly interested in seeing the iconic Landwasser Viaduct and other beautiful landscapes along the way.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the train from Zurich to Chur, then from Chur to St. Moritz for a scenic route similar to the Glacier and Bernina Express.
  • Consider changing trains at Landquart to go via Klosters and Samedan for different views before reaching St. Moritz.
  • Use the SBB timetable to find a train that goes via Landquart and Samedan, as direct trains from Zurich Airport are not available.

    Hello ,

I looked at the train schedule departing Zürich airport to St. Moritz and I believe it offers three different “Via “ . Can you tell me the one that’s the most scenic ride . We will be traveling from Zurich airport in January around 11:00 am

    Thank you

If you go Zurich to Chur then from Chur to St Moritz you will be on the same route as the iconic Glacier and Bernina Express trains and get to see the Landwasser Viaduct. That’s the way I’d go.

Thank you so much ! I’m taking the GE from St. Moritz to Zermatt a couple of days later and both trips are different directions and not repeated correct ?

So from Zurich by way of Chur it’s the Geneva direction on SBB website correct?

    thank you again !

    Hello Cathy,

Oh, well in that case I would suggest you change trains at Landquart and go via Klosters and Samedan to St Moritz so you can enjoy some different scenery to what you will experience on the GEX.

    See attached . . . .

You are going to have to change at Zurich HB whatever you do. If you put in Zurich Airport to St Moritz in the SBB timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) then pick one that goes via Landquart and Samedan as per my attachment.

I now see why you were asking if the train with direction Geneva was the correct one. Trains departing the airport will have all manner of end-point directions but will mostly go via Zurich HB. But you can’t get a direct train from the Airport to Chur (or Landquart for that matter).
