1st class Swiss Travel Pass for Bernina Express?

Short summary – read this first

Bonnie is planning to take the Bernina Express and is unsure about seat reservations with the Swiss Travel Pass. She wants to know if she needs to buy a first-class Swiss Travel Pass to reserve her first-class seats on the train. After some advice, Bonnie decided to purchase the first-class Swiss Travel Pass and secure her seat reservations.

Key takeaways:
  • You can upgrade from a second-class Swiss Travel Pass to first class for specific journeys like the Bernina Express by paying for a seat upgrade at the station.
  • Purchasing a first-class Swiss Travel Pass allows you to reserve seats on the Bernina Express without needing additional tickets.
  • Always consider reserving your train seats in advance, especially for scenic routes like the Bernina Express to ensure availability.

We are considering reserving 1st class seats on the Bernini Express.. If we do, would that mean we would need to buy a first class Swiss Travel Pass if we wanted to use the Pass for that reservation? We were not planning on using 1st class for any other trains during our trip.

    Hi Bonnie,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The Swiss Travel Pass is available for 1st and 2nd Class travel: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price. If you have a 2nd Class Swiss Travel Pass and wish to travel in 1st Class for one or more journeys, you can purchase a route-specific seat upgrade. For instance on the Bernina Express, if you have a seat reservation in 1st Class, you just need to pay for a seat upgrade at the station before your trip.

You can find more information in the following links:

    Seat upgrade 1st-2nd class: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/2nd1stclass

Bernina Express tickets and seat: http://www.myswissalps.com/berninaexpress/tickets

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

Great, thank you! We decided to just purchase the 1st class Swiss Travel Pass, so we did that and also reserved our 1st class seats on the Bernina Express. Since we now have the Swiss travel pass, based on what your website says it looks like we don’t have to further purchase any tickets, our pass plus the reserved seats should be sufficient?

(Thank you for being so patient and helpful as we are new to train travel!).

That’s right, you have your seat reservation(s) booked and now that you also have your Swiss Travel Pass purchased, you are all set to enjoy the Bernina Express 🙂

    Have a wonderful time!

    Kind regards,

    Yoanda
