It really depends on the route and time of day you are traveling. Some trains can get quite busy, but 1st class is always less crowded. If you want to avoid crowds as much as possible go with 1st class if it is within your budget. https://www.myswissalp s.com/train/practical/ 2nd1stclass
You can check expected occupancy on any train route on the Swiss railways timetable: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable – you’ll see a column for occupancy rate. 3 red figures/men means very busy.
Most of the time, it’s pretty OK in 2nd class but at times you may have problem. Like Lucas said, it depends on time, day and route. SBB app is a really good way to check expected occupancy. 3 reds means very busy.
