Using 2G mobile phones in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

Clive is looking to find out if his 2G phone will work in Switzerland. He wants to make sure he can use his phone during his trip, and he received helpful responses confirming that Swisscom, Salt, and Sunrise will still support 2G until the end of 2020.

Key takeaways:
  • You'll be able to use a 2G phone in Switzerland, but check if your provider supports 2G service.
  • If you have a T-Mobile plan, you'll get unlimited 2G roaming data, though it might be slow. Make sure to compress photos if you're sending them.

Hello Clive and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Yes. Swisscom will phase 2G out by end of 2020. Not sure about Salt or Sunrise but see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ 2G.

    Hello Clvereynold,

According to my research also Salt and Sunrise will serve 2G devices until 2020 too. So you will be fine.

    Best,
    Steph

I have T-Mobile plan in the US, and they give unlimited 2G roaming data abroad. It seemed to work fine when I was in Switzerland in August, but extremely slow since it’s only 2G. But I managed to send some compressed photos to friends and family while on the train.
