We are arriving in Zurich at 11am on May 1st and will have May 1-May 4 to travel through Switzerland. We are open to suggestions as to where to stay and what to do, but we definitely want to see and day hike around Zermatt and day hike in the Bernese Oberland region, probably Jungfrau region. Should we stay in Zermatt for a night or would we be better off staying somewhere else (Grindelwald, Interlaken, Brig, Visp?) and do day trips from there? Can we easily do Zermatt in a day trip? We will be traveling by train and public transportation.

Any suggestions welcome, thank you!

At that time most trails will be closed at high altitudes...end of winter at high altitudes, not yet summer.

Lower altitudes may well be open. Depends on snow load from the winter.

Mid- June is a lot better,

There are lots of options, although early May is indeed not the best time for hiking around Zermatt. Lower walks should be ok though, as well as cable car/cogwheel train rides.

If you stay in a place like Spiez you're fairly flexible. You can easily reach Bern from there (perfect for a bad weather day), as well as the Jungfrau region, and Zermatt is doable as well. Thun and Interlaken are an option as well.
