We will be arriving in Bern on November 4 (Sunday) through (Thursday) November 8. Other than exploring the city of Bern and its attractions, what would be good day trips from that area? Is Gruyeres worth going to? Before Bern, we will be staying in Lucerne and going places around there so we are looking for good day trips in the Bern area this time.
Any must see towns or castles or sites we open to doing. (We have a Swiss Travel Pass and are just fine traveling for a few hours in each direction).
We are planning on going to Jungfrau and the Top of Europe on one of the days, either from Bern or Lucerne.

You might consider the Golden Pass Line (http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass) to Montreux? Nice scenic ride down to Lake Geneva. In a longish day you could maybe visit Gruyere on you way back to Bern. Depends on how crammed you like you days. Use the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel.

Lucerne and the Jungfrau region are great areas to visit for mountain experiences:
If the weather forecast is favourable a day trip to Zermatt to view the Matterhorn is also an option. Make sure that at least in one direction between Spiez and Zermatt you go via Kandersteg. You will then travel on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train over the traditional, more than 100 year old mountain route, giving you wonderful views along the impressive peaks and down into the Rhone Valley. The faster more direct route between Spiez and Visp incorporates the lengthy Lötschberger Base Tunnel. So not much to see that way.
