We are a couple in our 60s who love to do easy hikes. The last big trip we did was to Switzerland and we got to hike much of it thanks to the wonderful advice we received on this forum. We are planning another short trip in early September 2022 to take in some areas we did not see in 2019. After arriving at ZRH, we plan on taking the train to Appenzell for 2 nights, then to Pontresina for 4 nights, then take the Bernina Express and bus to Varenna for 3. Does this make sense? I note that there will be many transfers in the Appenzell to Pontresina leg. Would you suggest an 8 day pass? Thank you!

    Hi Ninachen,

Good to know you enjoyed your last trip and are already making plans for a return trip.

Travelling to Appenzell first prior to Pontresina, then Varenna definitely make sense to me. Make sure to use the timetable to plan the best connections. For tickets to Varenna, you can check for information here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy

For this trip, as you will be spending more days travelling in one region, you should probably look at getting the Graubunden Pass. In addition you can combine this with the Saver Day Pass to cover your trips to/from Appenzell. Click on the links for more details for each pass. Please study the Graubunden Pass validity map carefully. You can opt to get a Graubünden pass for just the north or south of the region for 33% cheaper than the regular price.

If you’re planning to do a lot more travelling across Switzerland, then the Swiss Travel Pass makes more sense. Have a look here to compare if this is the best combination for you: How to choose a railpass

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

Thank you, Anna! This is the best travel forum I’ve seen and it made our last pre Covid trip a dream. I was sad to learn of Slowpoke’s death because he was most helpful.

Glad this forum has been useful for you.

Slowpoke’s helpful input will definitely be missed here 🙁

No question you plan is the correct way to do that sequence.

The minimum number of changes of train Appenzell – Pontresina is three.
