Arno's advice excellent

Just wanted to say that you were correct not to worry about buying mountain rail tickets ahead. I was nervous and did it from home here in the US. Not only did I not have to do that it turned out it would have been cheaper to just buy as we were going along. So my advice to new travelers is to take Arno's advice!! We did have a great time.
