My wife and I plan a 3 day visit to the Lucerne area at the end of August before traveling to Milan. We have a question about Swiss Rail Passes. We arrive from US at Zurich airport and then travel to our hotel in Lucerne. We plan to visit city of Lucerne and some combination of Pilatus, Mount Rigi and Mount Titlus. Is a 4 day Swiss Pass practical? We would like to travel to Milan via Gothard Panorama Express. Is this possible from Lucerne and is it covered by Swiss Pass? Do we need additional reservations to travel to Milan? Thank you for your help.

Hi cwc1947 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

A 4 day Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass) probably works well for you if you do some expensive travel out of Lucerne each day (so those mountains would work). It will also cover your trip on the Gotthard Panorama Express which goes from Lucerne to Lugano (Tues – Sun); but you must also make reservations: https://www.myswissalp s.com/gotthardpanorama express/packages

However, to know which rail pass is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂

Train tickets from Chiasso (border town near Lugano) to Milan can be bought here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/traintickets/ita ly
