Hello,

We will be taking the Bernina Express from Tirano to St Moritz. Do we need to buy Bernina Express tickets ahead of time? Or we can buy the tickets at the Tirano station on the day of travel?

Two persons will be traveling on Sept 22, 2012
Eight persons will be traveling on Oct 23, 2012

Thanks for your help,

Pia

Hi Pia,

You need seat reservations for the Bernina Express. I would advice to arrange for that as soon as possible. In addition, you need tickets or a rail pass that covers the trip itself. I assume you're having or will be buying a rail pass? You can order along the seat reservations with the pass.

Hi Arno,
Thank you for your reply.

We intend to buy tickets only, not rail pass. Can we just buy the tickets with seat reservation at the Tirano train station right on the day of departure ?

OR Bernina Express trains are most of the time fully booked, such that it is advisable to buy train tickets and seat reservation in advance, i.e. before the departure date?

Thanks again.

Hi Pia,

The train can be fully booked, so I would advice to arrange for seat reservations as soon as possible. Tickets can be purchased either in Tirano or in advance as well, that doesn't matter.

Hi Arno,

Based on what I understand from your email, we can pay for or buy seat reservations in advance without buying the ticket in advance and that the ticket itself can be bought right at the train station on the day of departure.

Thanks very much for this valuable information.

Yes, correct. Seat reservations and tickets (or a rail pass) are in fact unrelated. You can purchase them either separately or together. As long as you have them both when you board the train, it's all fine.

Enjoy the ride!
