Buying swiss rail passes

Do you recommend buying the Swiss rail pass prior to leaving on holiday or on arrival in Switzerland? I have heard that it is cheaper to buy online, but I am worried about whether it will arrive prior to our departure. We will be travelling into Switzerland by train via Milan to Lugano. Is it possible to buy rail passes at any railway station, particularily Lugano? Thanks
