We are going to Zermatt for a day trip from Interlaken. We want to take the cable car to the to whatever the highest point it takes to. Do we need to book the cable car in advance? Or, would it be certainly available if we buy cable car ticket there? Also, I saw different cable cars online. Which one should we take? Which one of them takes to the highest point among all of them?

There is no need to book in advance, all routes will be available on the day. If you are just after height then cable car to Klein Matterhorn is what you want.

However this is not for all as if only in the area for one day some people will be prone to altitude sickness if going straight up and not feel great when up there. Also if in cloud cover there is little point in going up unless you just want to say you’ve done it. Something else to consider would be train to Gornergrat, in my opinion a more interesting journey with more to see.

This will still get you above 3000m, whilst approx 800m lower than Klein Matterhorn the views are still impressive. You can also walk from the top of Gornergrat, an option that is not possible from Klein Matterhorn. If you decide to go to Klein Matterhorn, then you need the lift up to Trockner Steg via Furi and Schwarzsee. From memory you can go in one car without getting off now all the way to Trockner Steg, however getting off one way at Schwarzsee would be recommended. Then change at Trockner Steg for the last up to Klein Matterhorn.

We are in Zermatt right now. Something else you might want to consider is taking the funicular from Rothorn station to Sunnega, the 1st stop…amazing Matterhorn view. Or take the train to Riffelalp from the Gornergrat station. Walk to the restaurant at Riffelalp for unreal views of the Matterhorn. Great hiking from both spots too.
