    Hi,

We will be coming by train from Paris at Basel. From Basel we want to rent a car and reach lauterbrunnen. Our booking is at Wengen. Please suggest anything that we should be taking care of. Like I read some where that kids under 14 need car seat?? Is it so? And why is that ? Where can we get those car seats? How is the drive?

    Thank you

    Hi Quratulainz,

In Switzerland, kids under 12 years must sit in a car seat if they are under 150 cm tall. Kids over 150 cm tall and over 12 years of age must wear a seat belt. The fine for driving with an unsecured child under the age of 12 or not wearing a seat belt is CHF 60.

Thank you Anna. My younger kids are 10, 11 but they are taller than 150 cm so should I still be needing the car seat for them?

    Hi Quratulainz,

If they are over 150cm, the won’t require car seats but they must wear seat belts.

Hi Quratulainz! In case you haven’t read this page yet, it might be worth to do so: http://www.myswissalps.com/carversustrain. Swiss trains and buses are an excellent option for most travelers, and there’s no need to pay attention to the road or worry about safety and traffic rules.

You did not ask this, but you should consider taking the train. You cannot take a car in Wengen and it will be left at the carpark.

We took the train from Basel to Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. Easy peasy, on time, easy to do. Buy discount tickets in advance or half fare card. Load SBB on your phone.

There’s so need to drive. Trains in Switzerland are among the best and most plentiful.

    Hello Quratulainz,

I also recommend taking the train too! The train system in Switzerland is world class and easy. Even locals avoid taking the car as much as possible. Wengen is a car-free area so you will have to find a place to park the car. Parking is not readily available and expensive. If you are still keen on renting a car, please take note of the various speeding tempos throughout the villages and highways. Speeding tickets costs a lot in Switzerland:

Please take a look at this link about Wengen: http://www.myswissalps.com/wengen

    Good luck!

    Best regards,

    Suzanne
