Looking specifically for first hand experience using a Eurail pass in Switzerland, Austria and/or Germany.

I don’t think the Swiss Pass will be a good deal for us because traveling with kids we will unlikely go to that many museums and the timing is odd as we will Be inn Switzerland for 6 days etc. Itinerary includes Zurich, Lauterbrunnen (with side trip to Jaunfrauoch), Lucerne, Innsbruck then Munich (with day trips to Neuschwanstein castle and Salzburg).

Planning to get a 3 country Eurail Pass along with Swiss Jr Rail passes for the kids (only need to pay for 2/4 kids) for Switzerland (mostly for Jaunfrauoch). Wanted to see if using the Eurail Pass in our planned countries is easy/flexible? I’ve read certain countries require significant reservation fees etc. but I haven’t found that to be the case for our route? Would love to have the flexibility when traveling with kids (4 kids ages 4-11). Any experience/advice appreciated. TIA!

Hi Goumgal1 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

It could be that the Eurail Select Pass could be best for your trip across those 3 countries. You can see which routes are covered on the “where it’s valid” tab on our Eurail Page here: http://www.myswissalps.com/eu railselectpass

You can then compare that to the discounts offered by the Swiss Travel Pass in Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass

The Swiss Travel Pass offers better discounts in Switzerland and if you have a fair bit of travel each day then an 8 day Swiss Travel Pass could make economic sense. You can then combine that with point to point tickets for Germany and Austria which can be fairly inexpensive if bought far enough in advance: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr avel/toswitzerland/tra in/tickets

If you’d like to do the math and compare to be sure which rail pass is best for your trip, read through our page here (and use the spreadsheet) to compare once your final itinerary is set: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass

    Hi,

I’m interested in this thread and have a few questions regarding Eurail Pass in Switzerland:

I bought Eurail Select Pass for 5 days across 4 countries including Switzerland, travelling early Feb 2019 for 2 adults and it’s free for the 2 kids (7yo and 4yo). We will be spending 4 days in Switzerland with initirary as below:

    – 1st day: train from Paris – Grindelwald

    – 2nd day: Grindelwald – Jungfraujoch – Grindelwald

    – 3rd day: Grindelwald – Schilthorn – Grindelwald

    – 4th day: train from Grindelwald – Rome

I did the math and point-to-point ticket with 25% discount using Eurail Pass turned out to be the best cost effective option. It surprised me as I used to think that Jungfrau H&S Pass would have been better. Just to make sure I did it correctly, I want to confirm some points below:

    1. When travelling with kids (7yo & 4yo) with the above initirary, they’re also getting free if we use Eurail Pass to buy point to point tickets in Switzerland

    2. We want to experience the sledging, can we do that any where in between Grindelwald to Schilthorn.

    3. Without any pass in Switzerland (just only Eurail Pass), do we need to pay any entrance pass for snow play/sledging, or just point-to-point ticket covering the whole trip is good enough?

    4. Would it eat up any days of my Eurail Pass if I use it to get discount on point-to-point tickets in Switzerland, as I already planned for 5 days intercity travel.

    Thanks,

    Truc

    Hi Truc,

    1. Children older than 5 can not travel for free on the discounted routes that you buy a ticket for: http://www.myswissalps.com/eu railglobalpass/price. You’ll get a 50% discount on tickets for the 7 year old. Perhaps buying a Junior travelcard makes sense: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju niortravelcard.

    2. There are various options. An easy one for you might be to take the chair lift to Schiltgrat and go sledding there. The lift departs near the Schilthorn cable car station in Mürren.

    3. There are no entrance fees, but renting a sled for example, is not included in any pass.

    4. No, only free traveling requires usage of a travel day: http://www.myswissalps.com/eu railglobalpass/validit y.

If you have further questions it would be best to post them in a new thread in the rail forum: http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/rail. Thanks!
