I am going to take a trip to Austria and Switzerland
for about one month. I am now considering buying a 8-day Austria Rail Pass and
a 15-day Swiss Pass for the two countries respectively. I plan to take a train
for my trip from Innsbruck of Austria to St. Moritz of Switzerland. I note
from your earlier reply to a topic that the Austria
Rail Pass would cover the Austrian portion of the trip and the Swiss
Pass would cover the Swiss portion,
if both passes were valid at the day of travel, the trip would be free. For my
case, when I start my trip from Innsbruck, my Swiss Pass
has not yet been validated. In this circumstance, will my Swiss
Pass be considered valid for the trip?

    Hello chung,

You are right: if you are not traveling via Germany, but directly from Austria to Switzerland, both passes combined will cover the entire trip. The Swiss Pass needs to be validated before you starting using it (i.e. before the Swiss border). Depending on the type of pass you can validate it yourself or ask the personnel of the train to Switzerland while you’re still in Austria. See here for details. Further pass information, like prices and current promotions, can be found on the Swiss Pass page.

Thank you for your reply. If I chose to have my Swiss
Pass validated on the train from Innsbruck
to Sargans of Switzerland, would there be any Swiss railway personnel on board
the train to help for the validation process?

If I only bought a Swiss
Pass for my Swiss journey, then for
my trip from Innsbruck to St.
Moritz, could I buy an individual ticket only for my portion
of trip from Innsbruck to Sargans,
while I made use of my Swiss Pass
for my ongoing trips from Sargans to St. Moritz
    via Chur?

And I think it is not possible to reserve a seat for the
portion of trip from Chur to St. Moritz
since it is a RE train. Is it right?

    Hi Chung,

There should be Swiss personnel on board (at least when approaching Switzerland). In any case, the personnel should be able to help you with your pass. Of course you can also choose to purchase the pass from a reseller that allows to validate it yourself. See the Swiss Pass page I referred to. Go to the Prices tab for details.

Sure, you can either use a pass or a ticket in Austria. As long as you have tickets or passes for the whole trip, it’s all fine.

You don’t need seat reservations from Chur to St. Moritz.
