Hi,
Thanks in advance for any replies.
We hope to be travelling around Switzerland in late April / early May.
Some of the places we were planning to visit were St Moritz, Lugano, Lucerne, The Bernese Oberland, Berne and Montreux.
The Lauterbrunnen Valley area looks stunning. Does anyone have any opinions about being there, or any of the other areas, at that time of year?
I know it's between the main winter/summer seasons and some tourist facilities may close down.
At that time of year would we have a good chance of finding accommodation in these places when we arrived without pre-booking?
Also, if we take the Glacier Express from Zermatt, can we get off at Fiesch, and then get back on at Fiesch the next day and continue to St Moritz? We will be travelling with a Swiss pass..

Hi wayneg,

Early May is beautiful, with the mountain tops still covered in snow and Spring in the valleys. However, it ultimately depends on the weather of any particular day and the altitude. Bern is located much lower than St. Moritz, and that can make a huge difference. St. Moritz will be in early Spring, Bern may feel like Summer if you're lucky.

It is indeed low season so please check the timetable for trips you've planned, especially for mountain excursions. Some lifts and mountain trains may be closed. Accommodation should generally not be a problem to find. Another way is to book in advance but cancel if you want to: many hotels offer free cancellation until the day of arrival. You'll definitely have a place to stay but also the option to pick another hotel. This page is a good starting point.

You can get off the Glacier Express anywhere you like. Just keep in mind that you need seat reservations for every leg you'll be traveling. Please visit the Swiss Pass page for all details about the pass.

Have fun!
