Hello All,

Am hiking the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt in July and am wondering if there are downloadable maps of Swizerland for GPS iPhone App (and which App that might be. Thank you.

Hi Kjthepa-

Check this web site, from the Federation's land office -

www.swisstopo.admin.ch /internet/swisstopo/en /home/products.html

Let us know if that does not work for you.

Cannot find anything about downloadable GPS maps, just paper maps.

Thanks, now just have to think about whether it is worth 38 CHF (year-long subscription) for a 2-week trip :>)

<<"for a 2-week trip :>">>

Only 2.7 CHF per day, and you can reduce that substantially by coming back again for 4 weeks later on.

So I'll have maps to download, but I won't be able to find myself on them (I.e use the GPS) without cellphone service, right?

Don't know. Never used the service. Personally, I only do day hikes, I use paper maps....the batteries don't die, I can write on them, and they let me see the surroundings more easily.

SwissCom has pretty good coverage, but I don't know how good it will be along the Haute Route

There a few serious hikers on this Forum

Perhaps they can provide more useful information that what I have shown you.

If I was that worried, I would buy a individual GPS unit instead of trying to use my cellphone. The route is heavily marked, I'm taking a reputable guidebook (and a compass), and there should be lots of people heading in the same direction. Thanks for your help.

I'm using the Switzerland Mobility app for navigation. It does need network coverage, but their Switzerland Mobility Plus app for CHF 35 allows navigation without coverage: www.schweizmobil.ch/en /schweizmobil.html.

The app that Slowpoke suggested seems like a good option as well. It does work without network coverage too as you'll download maps in advance: www.swisstopo.admin.ch /internet/swisstopo/en /home/products/maps/mo bile/mobile_and.html. My car navigation app works like that as well. It only needs good GPS reception, so it works everywhere except in tunnels or under trees.

I purchased the Swiss Map Mobile app for iPad mini to use on a long distance trek along the Via Alpina. The iPad did not have cell service but the GPS function in the app worked very well to show our exact location at all times. However, for the Via Alpina at least, the trail signage is incredibly well done and I didn't use the app that much. It was more of a comfort or backup system.
