    Hi everyone

I am hoping to get some advice from you Alps experts. I will be travelling with my wife and 11 YO from 10th of April for 7 weeks covering Italy, Switzerland, France and UK/Scotland going from south to up north. After 17 days in Italy, I’ll be taking BE from Tirano on 27/04, staying a night in Pontresina, I’ll take GE next day to Either Zermatt or Brig and then Lauterbrunnen, spending 3 nights there (due to uncertainty of the weather otherwise prefer 3 nights in Murren), then 2 nights in Vevey and 2 nights in Lucerne then to Colmar France.

I know there are lot of threads on the Murren area about the weather and I’ll take my chances, however still got few concerns about the plan –

If I focus on lake side towns to see flowers, mountain peaks etc., is there any other suggestions apart from Vevey?

Is there any snow on Lauterbrunnen on the ground? I am really being fascinated by Rick Staves ‘review on this area though I won’t be seeing lush green fields, am I?

I have chosen Lauterbrunnen as a base simply because of its lower altitude otherwise prefer Murren, Also it is more suitable for both side of valley. Is this a good idea?

Based on my itinerary, which fare pass would be ideal?

Any other suggestions, destinations if I have to avoid Berner Oberland area?

    Many thanks

    Raj

Hi Raj and welcome to MySwissAlps!

I doubt you’ll get any snow in Lauterbrunnen at the end of April but you never know. Murren, as it is higher up may have some or get some. A bit early in the year for lush greenery though – especially in those areas.

For the best views of the region, Mürren (http://www.myswissalps.com/mu rren) or Wengen (http://www.myswissalps.com/we ngen) are the better choices over Lauterbrunnen (as they are higher up in the valley) whereas in Lauterbrunnen you are in the middle at the bottom. However it still is a lovely location and you can easily head up to either village from there. I wouldn’t be afraid of staying in any of the 3 towns. Do note that late April is low season and some shops and mountains close temporarily (between ski season and hiking season). http://www.myswissalps.com/be sttimetovisit This is a bit more noticable in smaller towns like Wengen and Murren and Lauterbrunnen to an extent.

    Lucas

    Thanks for the reply.

Murren is not showing any hotels on these dates (28 to 1st may), my concern is that if it is wet, muddy etc then we stuck in the valley, do you think I should base somewhere down and do the day trips to these mountains? I am after the green fields and mountains, not the snow everywhere.

    thanks

    Raj

    Hi Raj,

Some hotels may be closed at that time (off-season) but you should still find availability. Have you looked through our hotel page for Mürren? http://www.myswissalps.com/mu rren/hotels

If you want the best chance of green fields and no snow then stay in lower elevations. Thun and Brienz are popular options that aren’t too far from the mountains of the Jungfrau region: http://www.myswissalps.com/th un //http://www.myswissalps.com/br ienz
