    Hi!

Sorry if this question has already been asked before I haven’t been able to find anything on it. Me and my partner are coming to lugano in august and are very excited.

We are planning on doing alot of hiking and was wondering if it would be better to hire a car when out there or are the hike trails / mountains easy accessible?

    Thanks for any help! 🙂

Hi ejfrost and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Mostly train or bus access is sufficient to get you where you need to go. But it really depends on your plans in the area and where the hiking trails are. Best to figure out where you want to hike and then you can check with the Swiss railways timetable to see if a bus or train will get you there easily enough (it should).

The Ticino region and Lugano aren’t “hiking destinations” per se but there are always lots of options wherever you are in Switzerland! For hiking trails and other things to do there, check out tourism Ticino: https://www.ticino.ch/

    Hi Ejfrost,

I’m just back from the Ticino. I went by car but, as planned, I parked it and didn’t use it for two weeks. Nearly everything is perfectly accessible by public transport. Much more relaxed. The only occasion going by car could have been handy was for a hike in the Varzasca valley as the buses don’t run frequently there. However with a bit of planning it was doable, and we were able to walk an A to B route rather than having to return to the parking place.
