How much to upgrade to 1st class on a boat cruise?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a visit to Montreux at the end of August and wants to take a 2hr 50min cruise on La Suisse to Chateau Chillon. They have 2nd class Swiss Travel Passes and are considering upgrading to 1st class for better seating and restaurant access, asking for cost details and the purchasing process at the pier.

Key takeaways:
  • You can upgrade your ticket for half the price difference between 1st and 2nd class, which you can purchase at the pier or on board after showing your Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Food and drinks are allowed on the cruise as long as you don’t consume them in the restaurant.

We’ll have 2nd class Swiss Travel Passes when we are in Montreux at the end of August. There’s a 2hr 50minute cruise on La Suisse to Chateau Chillon that we want to take. I know the cruise itself is covered by our passes, but I’ve read that upgrading to 1st Class is recommended both for the upper level seating and for access to the restaurant.

Can anyone tell me how much that will cost the two of us? And can we go to the Montreux ticket office at the pier to purchase them that day?

    Hi Canadarocks,

Exact amounts are hard to tell, as they depend on the exact boat trip and route you have in mind. You’ll pay half of the difference between 1st class and 2nd class prices. Rates can be found through the link at the bottom of http://www.myswissalps.com/bo atlakegeneva/tickets. You can buy your upgrade ticket at the pier or at the boat, right after boarding, upon showing your Swiss Travel Pass.

Just to be sure I understand Annika. First class tickets for two adults are CHF 126 and the second class tickets are CHF 90. A difference of 36, so half of that is CHF 18. That’s what we will have to pay, correct?

Great! Can you tell me if we are allowed to bring food & drinks onboard? Wine by any chance? 🙂

Sure, no problem, as long as you don’t consume it in the restaurant.

    Hi Canadarocks-

Montreux to Chillon clearly would not require that much time.

I assume that you’ll get a nice tour of the lake?

Thanks Arno, good to know. And yes Slowpoke, it is not just the quick 15 minute route.
