Family of 4 traveling together from Milan to Murren by train on May 4th. Planning to stay in Murren for 4 nights for daily hiking trips, spending a day in Luzern (taking boat trip) on the 9th before heading to Basel for 2 nights. Flying back from Zurich on June 12th. We will likely be using transportation system in the Jungfrau region, but didn’t decide about Jungfraujoch yet. Not sure what train pass to choose-Swisspass, Family card, half fare card etc. Thanks

Hi Nilo123 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

I think you meant to write May 12 as your flight date from Zurich? Assuming you are in town for 8 days and traveling around the country (and not just in one region) I would look at the 8 day Swiss Travel Pass.
If you get the Swiss Travel Pass you can add-on, for free, the Swiss Family Card which covers children between 6 and 15. The Swiss Family Card doesn’t replace the Swiss Travel Pass.

The only way to know for sure which rail pass is the most economical for you is to plan out your itinerary and trips you are planning by train, boat, cable car etc. and do the math. We have a page here on how to choose the best rail pass that will help you do that.

Also, do note that early May is low season for hiking and isn’t the best time to hike in the Jungfrau region – still winter up there and some shops, hotels and restaurants are closed because of this.

Just to let you know, the cable car Lauterbrunnen-Grütschalp that connects you to the train to Mürren will be closed for maintenance from 30 Apr–4 May 2018.

You can still get to Mürren by getting Bus #141 (direction: Stechelberg, Hotel) from outside Lauterbrunnen railway station to the stop called “Schilthornbahn”. From there, you get the cable car to Mürren (changing cable cars at Gimmelwald).
