We will be arriving and staying in Interlaken (possibly Wengen) in June for 3 nights. We are hoping to do a day trip to Zermatt from Interlaken – once in Zermatt our plan is to take the cog wheel train ride to Gornergratbahn. Would you advise this as a day trip – if we take the early morning train from Interlaken to Zermatt, then the cog wheel train to Gornergratbahn, and then return train to Interlaken later in the afternoon or early evening. Please let me know if this is advisable as part of our itinernary? Thank you.

Yes that is possible. A long day but worth it to see the Matterhorn. Check the weather at Zermatt first and if you have the stamina go in one direction via Kandersteg for the most scenic route. It adds 1 hour to fastest route. You will then travel on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train over the traditional, more than 100 year old mountain route, giving you a wonderful view along the impressive peaks and down into the Rhone Valley.
