Yes it is allowed as we just experienced it numerous times in the last month while traveling in Switzerland and Italy! We luckily had seat reservations on our Swiss train from Interlaken to Milan full people standing all over–arrived in Milan surprise Regional Train strike was able to get an inner city train but our seat reservations could not be transferred —many many coaches filled to the brim with standing room only—-Train to La Spizea got there and train station filled with hundreds of stranded people —no trains running –road was closed-boats stopped running-finally the government stepped in and trains to Cinque Terre were opened from 6p-9p –Just where we wanted to go! Things do work out!

    Hi Darrell,

Sorry to hear that! Did you have to stand on Swiss trains too, or just on your way to Italy and in Italy?

No standing for us as we got on with our reservations and were quite comfortable all the way—We did have to ask people to move as they were sitting in our reserved seats .

In the intercity and regional trains in Switserland it is allowed to travel in standing position.

In some cogwheel trains also (Grindelwald <>Kleine Scheidegg <> Lauterbrunnen for instance) but in the most not. There are only seats in the most mountain trains.
