First and foremost I would like to say this is a wonderful forum as it has been extremely helpful with pretty much everything on traveling in Switzerland. I am looking for some advice on whether it would be a good idea to split my stays in July between Wengen and Grindelwald. I have read a lot of the comments and there is a strong opinion on staying in Wengen but I don’t want to have to take the train down everyday to get to the valley floor and candidly I like a place with a little energy. Our plan is to leave Luzern early in the morning so we should getting into the region by noon. I was thinking of staying two nights in Wengen (to appreciate the upper mountain views) and then three nights in Grindelwald. We will be heading to Zermatt for two nights after our stay in this area. Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

    Hi Jpehrson,

I don’t see the point of moving from Wengen to Grindelwald. Stay in Wengen only, unless you plan to visit Grindelwald sites that are not on the Grindelwald-Kleine Scheidegg line, in which case stay in Grindelwald only. A day trip from there is easily done.

    Enjoy!

Can you please elaborate on why you choose Wengen over Grindelwald? This will probably be my only trip over there so I want to do this correctly?

    Hello Jpehrson,

I think the answer to your questions strongly depends on how intensively you want to explore the area and each village. I assume the reason why Snowman suggests NOT to stay at the two bases is, that they are about 30/45 from one another by train.

On the other hand they are on kind of the opposite side of the mountain, maybe attached map will help you get an overview.

Get some inspiration of the two mentioned places as well as the larger regions below:

    Steph,

Thanks for your response. After reading more reviews on the two areas its sounding like the views and tranquility are more impressive in Wengen. I will be there in July which will be peak travel season so Wengen will be the more peaceful place to stay. I will just have to take the train down and up every day to get to the valley floor.

    Thanks.

Sure, and I am very positive you will utterly ENJOY each “commute” you’ll go through! 🙂

    Have fun.

I’m not sure what valley floor you are planning on visiting every day or why. Lauterbrunnen valley is much closer to Wengen than Grindelwald. Mannlichen and Kleine Scheidegg are as close or closer to Wengen. About the only thing significantly closer to Grindelwald is First or Grosse Scheidegg. That is not to say there is anything wrong with staying in Grindelwald.

Briefly, Wengen is car free, smaller, and better views but the views in Grindelwald are still nice. Grindelwald is larger so will have a larger choice for hotels and restaurants but is harder to get around as more spread out. I would say neither town will have much nightlife aside from bars and restaurants.

Personally I wouldn’t overly stress over which one to choose. You will have a nice stay at either but can easily visit the other as much as you want. But i agree that you should choose only one as your base.
