Re: the two boat trips described on this website as “Classic” and “Majestic” Lake Lucern Cruises via Lucerne/Vitznau/Rigi round trip. Please provide info on which itinerary takes longer, assuming no stopping for photos, just sightseeing/ transportation? Classic route takes cable car from Rigi Kaltbad to Weggis vs the Majestic route which takes the cogwheel train to Arth-Goldau and returns to Lucerne via train. Also, are there any tips on selecting from the many cruise boat options to correctly board the selected, preferred route? Thanks in advance!

Take any boat on Lake Luzern. There is no need to go on a specific ‘cruise’. An ordinary ticket allows you flexibility to travel on any boat .

The best way to do Rigi is to take a boat Luzern – Vitznau, go up on the Vitznau Rigi Bahn (red train), after spending time at the top come down on the other Rigi Railway (Arth Rigi Bahn – ARB) (blue train) to Arth Goldau and take any train from Arth Goldau to Luzern.

Would you please answer the question about the length of the two different itineraries, as described on website? Thanks!

My ‘best’ route is the same as the ‘Majestic’ route – taks 3h35 min

The ‘Classic’ via the Weggis cable car takes about 10 minutes longer

The best route is better because it gives you views on both sides of the Rigi. If you come back down on the Weggis cable car you see the same part of the lake as on the outbound leg.

Thank you for your helpful responses. Am I correct to assume that after taking the boat cruise from Lucerne to Vitznau, seeing Mt. Rigi, and returning to Lucerne via train as you described above (Arth Goldau) would be faster (if time is crucial) than returning via boat from Weggis to Lucerne?

    Hello Bbrown6235,

Yes, you are right, the way via Arth Goldau is minorly faster.

For details use our timetable and use the following legs to see the exact times.
    1. Rigi Kulm – via Arth Goldau – Lucerne
    2. Rigi Kulm – via Rigi Kulm First – via Weggis – Lucerne

About 10 minutes longer going back via Weggis, as I already said. This is mainly because the Weggis cable car statin is up the hill above the lake so it is not a direct connection to the boat.

That is one reason why I never recommend the Weggis route. At both Vitznau and Arth Goldau the Rigi train terminates very close to the onward transport

Sheepishly I admit my time constraint is that we’re hoping to disembark from a cruise in Basel that morning, take the train to Lucerne, and spend the afternoon on the L cruise /Mt. Rigi. Hopefully it’s not too ambitious! Thanks, all, for the very informative responses.

No, that should be easily achievable. Basel – Luzern only takes 1 hour on the train.

Incidentally you might find yourself back on the same train service if you do travel via Arth Goldau because some of the Basel – Luzern train are IC trains continuing to Locarno via Arth Goldau

By the way you will probably want to time your lake boat to be a paddle steamer. In which case you need to leave Luzern at latest 13.12 (because the steamers travel out from Luzern in the first half of the day to ensure their circuits are complete by the end of the afternoon.
